Last Saturday The College of Wooster women’s basketball team played their second away game in a row against Hiram College (4-2).

In what turned out to be a very entertaining game, the women lost their second game in a row by one point.

At the end of the first half, the Scots were up 30-21 on Hiram. Jessica Wingen ’13 scored 15 points along with nine rebounds. By the end of the game, she had earned 21 points and 11 rebounds, leading the team.

Right out of the locker room, the Terriers scored 12 unanswered points, putting them ahead of the Scots by one. Now that the game was in reach for both teams, the Scots and Terriers went back and forth for the rest of the game.

After the eight-shot scoring drought, Suvi Puripattarrapan ’14 sunk a three-point shot, turning the moment in the women’s favor. With a 35-33 score, the game continued to in each team’s hand until they had landed themselves in a 41-41 knot with only 8:52 left to play.

With only 1:28 remaining the Scots pulled ahead of Hiram after a three-point shot from Samantha Sulzer ’12. However, Samantha Morford of Hiram drained a two-point jump shot keeping the game within one at 53-52. Then Morford scored again, pulling Hiram ahead by one, and eventually winning the game.

Although the Fighting Scots made a valiant effort to the end, the Terriers held onto their lead and closed out the game with a 54-53 win.

Even though the Scots lost in dramatic fashion, they brought a great amount of momentum into their next game against Bluffton University on Tuesday.

After a season high of 21 points against Hiram, Sulzer returned with another strong game against Bluffton University. However, her efforts were not enough.

The women lost another close battle to the Beavers 53-50. The game was close all the way until the end.

Leading the team in minutes played, Puripattarrapan scored 11 points and had seven rebounds in the affair. Behind her was Karley Walker ’14 with nine points and three rebounds.

With only minutes left to play, the women found themselves down double-digits. With a strong effort at the end of the game, the Scots fought back to bring the game within three.

Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots did not have enough to combat the Bluffton University Beavers who improved to a 1-4 record.

After two very close and hard fought games, the women now have a three game losing streak which they wish to break in their next game against Case Western Reserve University tomorrow at 2 p.m.
