The womenís soccer team traveled to Marietta, Ohio last weekend for the annual Marietta Classic Tournament.
The Scots proved their worth and made their school proud by converting two wins and taking the tournament championship title. The first game could be said to have been something of a mismatch with St. Vincent College on the losing end of a lopsided final score of 8-2 in favor of the Scots.
Taking nothing away from the Scotsí outstanding play in the offensive third of the field, St. Vincent was clearly not prepared. Seven players contributed to the flourish of goal scoring, which would leave their opponent flustered, not knowing what had hit them.
The scoring started early on in the game with Chantal Koechli í10, who found the net twice over the weekend to establish herself as the MVP of the tournament. Liz Mott í11, Kelsey Peters í12 and Maggie Kehm í12 all managed to beat the keeper in a 90-minute scoring spree that even saw first-years Maggie Roberts, Paige Piper and Taylor Morgan get on the board for their first goals in a Wooster uniform.
When asked about the game against St. Vincent, Mott, who scored two goals in the game, said, ìThe best thing about Saturday was that lots of different people scored which shows we have a lot of scoring potential,” It is apparent that the Scots are a definite threat in front of the net, though their consistency was tested in Sundayís game against Marietta.
The second match-up of the weekend was a much tougher test for the ladies, who were unable to find the net in 81 minutes of regular play only to score the winner off Koechliís boot from 12 yards out. The game was a tense match with most of the possession and shots going to Wooster. Even with 26 shots and 12 corner kicks, the Scots still failed to put points on the board until a handball in the box stopped play and Koechli was able to easily tuck the winner into the back of the net.
The game showed that there is still plenty of room for the team to improve. Kerry Kiley í10 was upbeat about the second game. ìI think we deserved the win. We possessed the game. We had a lot of missed opportunities, but we deserved it,” said Kiley. Deserved or not, a win is a win, and the Scots showed that they can win with style this weekend, in both easier contests such as the game against St. Vincent, and more cagey affairs like the game against Marietta. The Scots hopefully can take the momentum gained from the weekend and carry it forward in upcoming games.
The Scots played Wednesday at Washington and Jefferson College after the Voice went to press. Tomorrow the team will travel to Bethany College in West Virginia for a 7 p.m. showdown.
