Softball battles cancer


The softball team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the American Cancer Society will participate in “StrikeOut Cancer” at today’s doubleheader against Wittenberg University to raise awareness about cancer.

The team will collect donations during today’s game that will go to The Benefit of Mason O’Donnell, the child of a woman in the softball community, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Last week, the Scots (9-17, 1-5 NCAC) fell to Denison University (21-5, 6-0 NCAC) in a doubleheader that resulted in two 8-0 losses at Granville, Ohio.† The Big Red’s Rebecca Dyer threw a no-hitter in the first match and Kelsey Hager allowed only four hits in the day’s second game.

In the first game, Wooster remained close to its competition at 2-0 through the first four innings, but Denison quickly recorded six more runs over the next few innings.

In the second game, Gina Pirolozzi ’13, Caitlin Gaffney ’11, Lauren Swinehart ’12 and Danielle Grooms ’14 successfully made it on base, but were unable to score for the Scots.

Last Thursday, the Scots split a doubleheader with Hiram College (14-9, 3-1 NCAC), winning the first game 2-1 but losing the second 7-3.

In the first game, Hiram gained an unearned run when Kristen Cooney was able to steal to second on an error and was driven home by Kelly Langland. Wooster recovered in the fourth ining to tie the game and gained the lead in the sixth.

In the second game, however, the Scots were overcome by Hiram.† Jessica Bolanz hit a two-run homer in the second inning for Hiram and Jena Ervin hit a three-run home run in the seventh for the win.

For Wooster, Kelley Johnson ’13, Gaffney and Jenn Horton ’13 all drove in runs for the Wooster scores.

Wooster played at Allegheny College on Thursday after press time, and will host a doubleheader against Wittenberg this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
