The men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio last Saturday to compete in the John Homon Open. The event was not team scored.
Abena Boamah-Acheampong ’13 was the Scots’ top performer, finishing in a four-way tie for second place in the women’s high jump with a 1.55-meter leap. The only jumper ahead of Boamah-Acheampong was Walsh University’s Amanda Bennet, who jumped 1.7 meters. Quinton Howard ’13 was tied for 11th out of 14 in the men’s high jump, reaching 1.72 meters.
Camille Schwartz ’14 did not make it to the finals in the women’s pole vault, but her men’s teammate David Brew ’14 got to fourth place in his event with a 3.38-meter vault, tying him with Mount Union’s Sean Andrews.
Sean Twining ’11 and Brandon Jacobs ’11 finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the first flight of the men’s long jump. Twining jumped 5.09 meters in the finals and Jacobs finished with a jump of 5.07 meters.
Miriam Wise ’11 came in fourth place in flight two of the women’s triple jump with a 9.88-meter performance, while Twining came in second place in the first flight of the men’s competition, jumping 10.73 meters. Jacobs came in third in the triple jump with a 10.19-meter display.
In flight one of the women’s discus throw competition, Veronique Jones ’13 came in seventh with a 27.45-meter throw and Somadina Irowisha ’11 finished in 11th with a throw of 21.68 meters. Kevin Orris ’12 finished in third place in flight one of the men’s competition with a 29.97-meter heave, placing him just ahead of Logan Pry ’12 and his 27.35-meter throw.
In the first flight of the women’s hammer throw, Jones, Katharina Kroll ’12 and Devin Johns ’14 came in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, with tosses of 31.18 meters from Jones, 28.98 meters by Kroll and 20.77 meters by Johns.
Josh Kime ’11 came in fourth in the men’s competition with a throw of 33.72 meters. Kime was joined by Orris and Pry, who finished in sixth and seventh, respectively, with throws of 33.42 and 30.78 meters.
Kroll had the third-highest score out of 30 competitors in the women’s javelin throw, with a 35.6-meter toss. Iworisha got second place in flight one with a 29.99-meter throw. Twining’s throw of 39.26 meters landed him in fifth place in flight two of the men’s shot-put competition.
Kroll was also second in flight one of the women’s shot put with a 9.46-meter throw. Jones finished eighth in flight two with a throw of 10.01 meters.
In the men’s competition, Pry came in sixth of eight in flight one with a 9.15-meter throw. Orris was eighth of 11 in flight two with 11.44 meters and Kime finished eighth of 12 in flight three with 13.06 meters.
Meredith Shaul ’12 had the sixth-best time out of 50 in the women’s 1500-meter run with a time of 4:57.91. Teammates Erin Plews-Ogan ’13, Chelsea Denlinger ’14 and Kelsie Herring ’12 came in ninth, 11th and 13th overall, respectively.
Whitney Rappole came in seventh in section one of the 400-meter hurdles. Sarah Appleton ’12 was ninth out of 28 runners in the 5000 meters, with a time of 19:17.10.
The Fighting Scots’ next meet is today at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio at 4:45 p.m. On Saturday they will travel to Delaware, Ohio for the All-Ohio Championships.
