The College of Wooster women’s golf team is nearing the end of the spring season with only two more weekends of competition. This past weekend, the women hosted 12 teams for the Wooster Spring Invitational at Mohican Hills Golf Course in Jeromesville, Ohio.
On Saturday, April 16, during their first day of play, the women sat in second place with a score of 333 on Saturday, only three strokes behind the first place team, Madonna University.
Some key players in the first day of competition were Hannah Buzolits ’17 with a score of 80, Sharmeen Chinoy ’16 who scored 84 and Emily Howerton ’17, who scored 83. Not far behind, Mallorey Stack ’17 scored 86 for the Scots, with Victoria Roney ’18 holding a score of 91 and Jennie Blosser ’19 with a score of 102.
By the second day, many of the Wooster golfers improved their score from the day before. Notably, Buzolits tallied up a score of 79 to add to her previous score, 80, which ultimately led her to take 1st place out of the 70 competitors.
On April 17, Buzolits scored a birdie on the 13th hole and parred the remaining holes to come out on top with a one-shot lead over two skilled competitors, Jordyn Shepler of Madonna University and Olivia DeMartino of University of Mount Union, who both tied for second.
With this performance, Buzolits earned medalist honors and is the second Fighting Scot to achieve that honor this year. Earlier in the season, in September 2015, Howerton also received medalist honors during the Ohio Wesleyan University’s Fall Invitational.
Both Chinoy and Howerton tied for 12th place, with a total score of 171 as the final day concluded on Sunday afternoon. College of Wooster golfers also held a tie for 28th, 31st and 54th place.
As the season comes to an end with only two weekends left, Chinoy is also nearing the end of her fourth year on the golf team. Earlier in April, at the Laura Bump Invitational in Ostrander, Ohio, Chinoy helped lead the team to second overall as she tied for tenth place of the 88 players and 16 teams.
In October 2015, at the Pat Clouse Invitational in Springfield, Ohio, Chinoy also played a vital role for the Fighting Scots as she landed in 16th place out of the 85 competitors and 14 teams. Chinoy has contributed greatly to this team and is anticipated to contribute to the Wooster women’s golf team for the last time in the final conference championship.
This Saturday the women’s golf team will travel to Streetsboro, Ohio, to compete in the first round of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship. With two days of golf on the Boulder Creek Golf Course, the Fighting Scots look to build on their recent successes.
