Volleyball spikes back

The volleyball team has found their groove again in conference play with three straight NCAC wins.† The Scots, which started the season 11-2 overall hit a bump in the road losing three consecutive conference matches, two of which coming at the hands of rival Wittenberg University.

The team played Wittenberg for the second time in just six days and unfortunately the result was just as familiar as the first meeting.† The Tigers mauled the Scots with little resistance in straight sets 15-25, 22-25 and 16-25.

The Scots proved to have a short memory as they traveled to Earlham College for a match the next day and made short work of the Quakers with a dominating straight set victory of their own (25-15, 25-16 and 25-20.)

After handling Earlham with ease the team traveled mid-week to Oberlin College for an NCAC showdown with the Yeowomen. The Scots prevailed in five sets to earn their 13th win of the season in their first match to reach a fifth game.

KateLynn Riley í10 led the offensive charge with 18 kills in the match. Erin Webster í13 and Sarah Hawke í12 who recorded 12 and seven kills respectively contributed in the win. Every set was close with Oberlin and Wooster swapping sets until the Scots pulled away in the deciding fifth (22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20 and 15-6.)

After seven straight road matches the Scots returned home last Saturday hosting Ohio Wesleyan University and Case Western Reserve University.

In their first match the Scots tacked another win onto their impressive record by beating the Bishops in four sets (25-22, 25-27, 25-18 and 25-21).

The Bishops gave the Scots a tough match despite being overmatched. Melissa Morgan í13 contributed 14 kills in the win with Riley racking up 16 kills of her own.

The three match winning streak and the success of the first match were quickly nixed by the Spartans in the final match of the day.† Case Western Reserve, who came into the play with an impressive 16-3 record, faced a strong and undaunted opposition in the Scots. After winning the first set the Scots dropped the next three and the match to the Spartans (25-22, 19-25, 25-27 and 23-25).

Riley said that despite the recent struggles she remains optimistic, believing the Scots ìhave some really important conference matches coming up that will set the tone for the remainder of our schedule.” The team looks to get back on track tomorrow against familiar foes Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin.
