The College of Wooster track and field team proved to be among the best in the Buckeye State as they competed at the All-Ohio Division III Track and Field Championships held on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University. The men’s team finished 15th, with a strong showing in the 10,000 meter race. Right around the same position, the women’s team finished in 16th place.
The Fighting Scots snagged two of the top five spots among the 36 tough competitors in the men’s 10,000 meters. Luke Hutchings-Goetz ’14 covered the grueling race in an impressive time of 33:10.12 minutes, landing him in third place. His teammate Joe David ’15 was less than 10 seconds behind him in fifth place (33:19.83). Wooster almost had a third scorer in the event as Morgan Clark ’14 crossed the finish line in ninth (33:35.27). These three competitors should make a promising trio when they race the event again at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships in a few weeks.
Mark Stair ’17 added a strong third place showing in the high jump. The first year cleared 6 feet 8 inches. David Brew ’14 was Wooster’s remaining scorer, finishing seventh in the 800 meters (1:56.76). Coming up short of the top eight were Matt Margida ’16 and Blake Pecoraro ’17. Margida took ninth in the shot put (45 feet, 11.25 inches), while Pecoraro landed 10th place in the 5000 meters (15:41.42).
The women’s competition consisted of scoring in four different events. Hilary Coady ’16 had already racked up team points with a fifth-place performance in the All-Ohio heptathlon last week. This weekend, she added even more points to the team’s total via a third place effort in the 400 meter hurdles with a notable time of 1:04.84 on Saturday.
In addition to Coady’s individual contributions, the Scots had two scoring relays. Ashley Huddson ’15, Lauren Buyan ’15, Coady and Edith Anderson ’14 worked together to achieve fifth place in the 4×400 meter dash (4:05.56). The 4×100 meter dash relay team included Paris Nahas ’16, Anderson, Kara Johnson ’14 and Kennedy Payne ’17. They finished seventh with a time of 50.53.
Nahas also had a noteworthy individual performance as she sprinted her way to eighth place in the 200 meter race (26.36). She fell short of the team scoring in the 100 meter race with still a stellar time of 12.77 seconds, which landed her in 10th place.
The Scots will look to carry the momentum gained at the All-Ohio Championships into the remainder of the season. They will compete tomorrow at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio.
