Mark Giuliano, a graduate of the College of Wooster, has recently been named Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This makes Giuliano the second highest-ranking official in the FBI.
As Deputy Director, Giuliano will oversee all domestic and international investigative and intelligence activities. He will also serve as acting director if the need arises. All other FBI executives and Special Agents in charge report to the Director through the Deputy Director.
The Deputy Director is the highest position attainable within the FBI without being appointed by the President.
Giuliano, who graduated in 1983 with a degree in economics, has been a part of the Bureau since becoming a special agent in 1988. He was born in Middleburg Heights, Ohio and graduated from St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio.
Most recently, he served as the agent in charge of the Atlanta Division, taking the position in August 2012. Prior to that, he was the assistant director of the Counterterrorism Division at the FBI headquarters in D.C. In this role, he oversaw all major FBI international and domestic terrorism operations. He then became executive assistant director of the National Security Branch, managing the implementation of the FBI’s national security mission and its handling of security threats.
He received the Director’s Award for Excellence in Investigation while working on the Safe Streets and Gang Task Force and was a SWAT assault team leader. He also served as an FBI on-scene commander in Afghanistan.
Giuliano will replace current Deputy Director Sean Joyce, who is retiring after 26 years with the FBI, and will assume the office on Dec. 1. Giuliano will be the 15th Deputy Director, a position notably once held by Mark Felt, who was the Watergate whistleblower Deep Throat.
Giuliano will assist the recently appointed FBI Director James Comey in running the Bureau.
