The College of Wooster field hockey team ended their season last Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Greencastle, Ind. Although the Fighting Scots were shut out 6-0 against DePauw University, the team lived up to their name and were relentless in their battle against the Tigers.
The match-up started out competitively in the first half when DePauw earned a 2-0 advantage by halftime. Unfortunately the Tigers’ offense exploded for another three goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half. Wooster’s best offensive opportunities came late in the contest, when they took two penalty corners, one resulting in a shot on goal by team captain Josie Rey ’14 that failed to make it past the goalkeeper.
Wooster’s loss against DePauw marked the last game of the collegiate careers of seniors Edie Anderson, Meredith Farley, team captain Nikki Sever, and Rey. Farley went out with a bang, saving 12 shots on goal, despite the tough loss. Sever and Rey indicated that Farley was abroad in Scotland last year and made a strong return this year. Even after being away from field hockey for a year she was one of the top goalies in the conference and was an important asset to the team.
When asked if they met their expectations for the season, Sever and Rey said it was initially difficult to predict how the team would do because of the changes that the loss of several quality players wrought on the team dynamic. Nonetheless, they brought in a number of quality players who provided a great deal of depth to the team.
“In predictions we are always positive and we always see ourselves in the conference tournament,” Sever and Rey said.
“Our team had a strong start and a strong end to the season. We hit a slump in the middle but came together and figured out how to work and connect as a team,” they said. “We are very proud of our team, not only for reaching the goal of going to the conference tournament, but for connecting and becoming one unit after such great changes to the composition and dynamic of our team.”
Although the Scots fell short in the conference tournament, they still achieved great success overall as a team. As members of the team expressed, they were determined throughout the season to make it to the tournament. The Scots overcame some slight adversity in mid-season, but showed their endurance and focus as they were able to push through and reach the postseason. Wooster field hockey is proud of these accomplishments and is eager to build off of them in the years to come.
