For the 2019-20 school year, Waverly Hart ’20 and Desi LaPoole ’20 were chosen as Editors in Chief for The Wooster Voice by Mackenzie Clark ’19 and Coral Ciupak ’19 who currently occupy the leadership positions. Chloe Burdette ’21 has been selected as Managing Editor.
The new senior editors have conducted interviews, and are currently in the process of selecting the 2019-2020 editorial board. Hart, who has previously served as a News Editor and is the current Managing Editor of the Voice, expressed her thoughts on the applicant pool.
“We have a good number of very strong applicants, and I’m excited to oversee and supervise a group of talented students who are passionate about journalism,” Hart said.
LaPoole, who is currently studying abroad but has previously served as both an Arts and Entertainment Editor and Features Editor, explained her feelings about her new position and what it will entail.
“Becoming Editor in Chief was something that I’ve been working toward since my [first year], so being chosen for the position felt like such an accomplishment,” LaPoole said. “But it doesn’t just end there. There’s a lot of work that I’ll have to do in order to continue the great stories we’ve been putting out since my [first year], and to make sure the paper continues to grow and improve after I’ve graduated.”
Burdette, who held the position of Sports Editor for the Voice this past academic year, shared a similar sentiment.
“I am so excited to be the managing editor next year. One of my main goals before college was to somehow be involved in journalism and the Voice has allowed me to fulfill that goal and exceed my expectations,” she said.
Clark and Ciupak also shared their sentiments about the new senior editors.
“I’m so excited for next year’s senior editors and I’m confident that they will exhibit excellence in both their leadership and editorial skills, especially because all three of them are interested in pursuing journalism professionally,” said Clark.
“I have the utmost confidence in the Voice’s leadership for this upcoming year,” said Ciupak. “For Desi, Waverly and Chloe to have professional aspirations to journalism will mean a new and exciting direction for the paper to take; I’m very much looking forward to all the improvements they will make with respect to the Voice’s content and overall production.”
All three of the senior editors share similar goals for the publication in the future. “For next year, Desi, Chloe and I would love to renovate the website to make it more accessible to students, alumni and interested parents,” Hart explained. “We are also hoping to increase our social media presence and make our digital platforms more interactive.”
Burdette added, “Within the next year, I hope to increase our readership with not only the campus community, but those in the [city] of Wooster as well.”
Hart, LaPoole and Burdette all expressed their excitement about working alongside each other as well as the new and returning section editors and are grateful for this opportunity to be at the helm for the Voice.
“I am thankful for the Voice, for the new friendships I have made with my co-workers and the amazing experiences I have had,” Burdette stated.
