On Saturday, Feb. 27, the Wooster men’s lacrosse team was able to persevere despite a late run by John Carroll University (JCU), winning the match between the two by a score of 12-11.
The first half of the game was characterized by a “strong, consistent effort” from the Scots, according to head coach PJ Kavanagh. At halftime, Wooster led by a score of 9-2.
In the second half of the game, and especially in the last twenty minutes, JCU quickly gained ground, scoring nine goals.
Kavanagh attributed the almost-comeback to a change in JCU’s goalie and momentum from their offense that lasted through the entire second half.
However, the Fighting Scots were able to keep their lead until the end of the game, and Kavanagh viewed the win as the team’s “best effort” he has seen as head coach, a position that he has held since last year.
The team’s offense held a 27 percent success rate, successfully scoring 12 goals of their 44 attempts.
Nate Weltman ’16 led the team with three goals.
Sam Kuhn ’18, Aidan Crowe ’18, Ian Brim ’18 and Josh Herold ’17 each scored two goals, while CJ Polak ’17 had one.
Six of the Scots’ 11 goals were assisted. Kuhn led the team with three assists. Matt Parmelee ’17 added two more, while Herold had one.
Kavanagh believes his team will have a promising season if it can continue “to win hustle plays.”
Moving forward, the team will continue to focus on shooting “accurately and efficiently” in order to ensure that when the team will be able to “capitalize on scoring opportunities.”
The men’s next game will be this Saturday, March 5, at Washington & Jefferson College.
