Staff shortages result in self-service Deli

Upon returning to campus, students were notified via a sign in the Lowry Dining Hall that the Deli station, which was previously fully staffed, would now be self-serve. 

“Over Winter Break, we realized that we would start the second semester short-staffed while working to train new employees,” said Interim Director of Campus Dining and Conference Services Marjorie Shamp. 

Overall, Dining Services reported that the transition has gone smoothly and been positively received by the student body. 

In some ways, the change has improved the experience of students at the Deli.

“Many students have expressed that the wait for Deli sandwiches is shorter now, and they enjoy pressing their own panini sandwiches,” reported Shamp. 

In addition, to prevent any cross contamination, Dining Services has supplied parchment paper liners.

“Students with food allergies can use the liners to shield their sandwich from the panini grill plates, which was not the practice prior to this semester,” said Shamp. “My hope is that students with food allergies will be able to finally have a panini, using the paper liners.” 

For the most part, the change has not altered much. Even with students having access to as many sandwich ingredients as they choose, the consumption of deli meat, cheese and bread re
