Though students are most accustomed to hearing the sound of bagpipes across campus, this Saturday night, a new musical vocabulary word will be introduced to most of Wooster: klezmer.
The Cleveland klezmer band Yiddishe Cup is returning to Wooster to give a concert in Lowry ballroom beginning at 9:30 p.m. Klezmer refers to an eclectic style of music with origins in Eastern European Jewish folk tunes, influenced by everything from swing to Yiddish theater numbers. The music is meant for dancing, and Yiddishe Cup promises to be lively; the group has performed across the country as one of the nation’s premiere klezmer bands. Also known for their humor, the band titled its award-winning first album “Klezmerized” and their follow-up “Yiddfellas.”
The show is funded by the Kornfeld Endowment, which supports Jewish cultural events on campus, and is sponsored by Hillel, the College’s Jewish student organization. Yiddishe Cup will perform in Lowry ballroom at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. – Libba Smith, A&E Editor
