BRAUN’S SUSPENSION OVERTURNED

On Feb. 23 baseball arbitrator Shyam Das overturned Milwaukee Brewer Ryan Braun’s 50-game suspension, marking the first time a baseball player has successfully challenged a drug-related charge on a grievance. The National League MVP tested positive for elevated testosterone levels back in December, but when a second test came back normal, Braun appealed the commissioner’s suspension. At a hearing in January, he provided evidence that the first urine sample was mishandled by the collector. In response to Das’ decision, the MLB is considering suing in federal court.

COMBINE HIGHLIGHTS

The NFL combine took place this week in Indianapolis. Top prospects from colleges all over the country arrived to show their skills for NFL scouts in a variety of drills. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck surprised many by running the 40-yard dash in an unofficial time of 4.59 seconds — as fast as Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who was second in the NFL in rushing touchdowns last season. Memphis defensive tackle ran an unofficial 4.87 in the dash while weighing in at 346 pounds, and he also benched 225 pounds 44 times, leading all players in the bench press.
