MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

 

Abena Boamah-Acheampong ’13 won the women’s high jump at the All-Ohio Championships last Saturday, which included a 19-team meet at Granville, Ohio on Saturday and a dual meet at Oberlin College on Friday.

The women took 10th-place at the All-Ohio Championships with the help of Boamah-Acheampong, Erin Plews-Ogan ’13, who cleared the school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase with 11:40.20, and Meredith Shaul ’12, who finished the 10000-meter race in third place at 39:33.51.† Whitney Rappole ’11 finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and Stephanie McShane ’13 took eighth-place in the 200-meter dash.

Josh Kime ’11 led the men at 14th-place in the shot put (41 feet, 11.75 inches), while Micah Caunter ’12 took 17th-place in the 800-meters.

Tomorrow, Wooster will compete at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio.

 

 

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GOLF

 

Michael Peters ’12 led the men’s golf team to third place at the Strimer Memorial Invitational at Glenross Golf Course in Delaware, Ohio last weekend.† Wooster shot a 625 on the two-day, 36-hole tournament.† Adrian College took first with 604, narrowly beating the host of the tournament, Ohio Wesleyan University (605).

Peters shot one-under par with 69 on the first day, tying for day one’s lowest round.† On a windy second day, he shot a 79 for a score of 147, which tied him for the second-lowest total of the weekend.† Following Peters, Tim Faerber ’12 shot a 155 (75-80) and John Angelo ’13 finished at 157 (77-80).

Over the weekend, the women’s golf team finished in fourth place out of seven teams at the Laura Bump Invitational at Mill Creek Golf Club in Ostrander, Ohio.† Wooster maintained third-place through the first 18, but fell to fourth-place in Sunday’s windy conditions.† DaSol Kuen ’14 and Lorraine Sullivan ’14 both recorded 92 on Saturday, and Sullivan finished at 98 on the second day for a 13th-place finish.

The Scots finished fourth with a total of 810, behind Capitol University (806), although Wooster finished in front of its North Coast Athletic Conference competition, Denison University, Hiram College and Ohio Wesleyan University.

Wooster will host the Nye Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday, while the women will host the first of two weekends of the NCAC Golf Championship Series at the Wooster Country Club.

 

NBA

 

Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom was honored with the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award on Tuesday. The award honors the league’s best player who comes off the bench. Odom averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and three assists per game in 47 appearances as a reserve and 35 games as a starter. He shot 53 percent from the field.

Odom is the first player in franchise history to win the award, beating out competition including Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks, Glen Davis of the Boston Celtics, James Harden of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Thaddeus Young of the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Lakers are currently in a first-round playoff series against the New Orleans Hornets. As of press time, they trail 1-0 in the best-of-seven series.

NFL

 

In spite of the ever-increasing possibility of a locked out season, the NFL released the 2011 schedule on Tuesday. The defending champion Green Bay Packers will host the New Orleans Saints on September 8. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play the Chicago Bears in the league’s annual game in Wembley Stadium in London, England on October 23. On the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the New York Jets will host the Dallas Cowboys.
