Wooster’s Greek organizations are trying to improve their anti-hazing educational events with the help of funding from Campus Council.
On Thursday, Oct. 20 Campus Council allocated funds to the Inter-Greek Council (IGC). Diego Arellano, co-president of IGC, said, “In the past, our anti-hazing programming has been led by IGC and Joe Kirk [associate director of Security and Protective Services/director of Greek Life]. The new funds are simply to improve the quality of programming we provide our students groups with regards to hazing.”
The improvement comes in the form of a new film and talk.
“IGC was approached by a program called ‘RefinED Character,’ which talks to groups about the psychological, emotional and physical danger of hazing,” said Arellano. “The program entails the showing of a film called HAZE (2016) followed by a conversation with Scott Heydt, a facilitator meant to guide the emotions evoked from the film.”
HAZE was written and directed by David Burkman. The film is a modern retelling of ancient Greek mythology that provides a realistic depiction of life in fraternities and sororities.
The story follows a college freshman attempting to join the best fraternity on campus, when his older brother starts an anti-hazing campaign in the wake of a violent fraternity hazing death.
Although there is no set date for when the program will be happening, IGC plans on trying to make it a wider attended event involving more than just Greek organizations.
“When we do, we would like to extend an invitation not only to Greek groups, but to athletic group, chorus groups and any other organizations on campus,” said Arellano.
